Selat Track of Agung Mountain

Start from Pasar Agung temple at 1620 meters above sea level (masl). Ask a permission and guide or porter to temple officer. From here to Telaga Emas (gold pond) at 1990 masl is easy enough to find, just follow twin water pipe from behind the temple we can reach the Telaga Emas which is the source of water. But this track is slope upward about 30 degree with hard soil and rather sandy. Along the track on left side is heterogeneous forest with plant such as pine (Pinus mercuri), casuarinas (Casuarina junglunia), strawberry (Frugario veca), and senggani (Melestama candidum).

On the right is a dry river. Approach the Telaga Emas density of forest is lesser and domination by bushes (Dacrylis glumerata) and casuarinas. The fauna is long tail gray monkey (Macaca fascicularis) and some bird. Telaga Emas is dam right on top of the waterfall at dry river. The twin water pipe is end here. Telaga Emas is a good place to build tent or camp, this is the only one place to camp.

Track time from temple to Telaga Emas is about 1 hour. Named Telaga Emas because according to Hindu belief, this place is a place for God that love using gold jewelry. Bring gold jewelry to this place make the God jealous. According to true story, there was some one coming through Telaga Emas with gold earring, and suddenly a bright sky turn to hard windy rain. Because that rain, the climber go down back to temple. Right when the climber through the Telaga Emas, the rain was stop.
From Telaga Emas until 2340 masl height, a border of vegetation, dominant plant is bushes and kaliandra (Calliandra sp).

Track below triangulations point

More slope with hardened soil and ravine on both sides until triangulation point at 2465 masl. From triangulation until mountaintop (2850 masl) is giant step on frozen rock came from volcano activity on March 17th 1963.

It’s not a truly giant step, but because most climb step at same place, its make a big foot print like giant step. The track angel approach to 45 degree without any tree can be use to make good balance, just few edelweiss and small bushes.

Track time from Telaga Emas to mountaintop is about 3 hours, so ask the local people what time for the sunrise to plan the climb.

Note:

• The altitude meters is altimeters barometer and could be vary result with other and depend on nature condition.
• Track time is base on flaying camp technique (bring all climb equipment and foods with one big carrier)
