Rock Climbing at Jimbaran

At Jimbaran there are some rock climbing location that able to climb until now, each location has some stripes on same face or other cliff face.
First location and nearest from Denpasar city is Pondok Pemuda area or knowing as PP. this cliff stand on seasoning river downstream, exactly at Jimbaran bay which separate Mimpi Resort with they competitor.

Pondok Pemuda stripe

Four stripes on four climbing cliff that is WD1 stripe, FPTI stripe, WD2 stripe, and the popular is Pondok Pemuda stripe.

To go to this location, from Denpasar go to Mimpi Resort or Four Season at Jimbaran. There are two ways to go to Pondok Pemuda cliff, follow the Four Season beach until find the cliff about 1 mile or by Mimpi Resort, its same distant, but by Mimpi car or motor bike can reach half way. And if the car or motorbike is off road able can be use to the cliff. This area is not just for climbing, fishing, camping is able here.

Some organizations that care about nature from high school and university use this place for training their new member. On right side, across the river there is Japan bunker and cave that was use for defense on world war two. On left side, near the beach is temple belong to local people.

• WD1 stripe
  Located on right of cliff near big hole. Climbing cliff with 12 meters high and 12 meters vertical climbing stripe is karst rock (old lime). Anchor can be place on cliff slot.
• FPTI stripe
  Located about 7 meters on left of WD1 stripe. These 11 meters high of karst cliff only have 7 meters long of climbing stripe. Start with 3 meters face, 1,5 meters vertical, 3 meters over hang dan the rest is vertical. When climb here, passing first vertical is a must other ways is big problem if fall on the 3 meters face. Is not difficult to pass the first vertical because lot of variation fissure and slot.
• WD2 stripe
  Cliff locates on the left of FPTI stripe is 10 meters karst cliff with 10 meters long climbing stripe. Start with 3 meters vertical follow by over hang and vertical again until top. Some clearing hole and slot is strong enough as anchor.
• Pondok Pemuda stripe
  Located on left of WD2 stripe and nearest with the beach is 15 meters karst cliff with 15 meters vertical climbing stripe. This climbing cliff have one hole with diameter about 0,6 meter on the center. Lot of clearing hole and slot for anchor.

The four stripes explain above is able using top rope system, because much tree on the top of cliff. Now, after the tourism company enters the area there is a step from top of cliff to the beach, which under the Pondok Pemuda stripe there is wood bridge, and on the edge of bridge is small quay with roof.

Second location that commonly knows by rock climber is Padang-Padang beach or Labuhan Said the “cave gate” (read Bali Rock Climbing). On this location there is one cliff with some stripe start with low roof until vertical without any slot. Every stripe is set for hanger, but need to be check before use it because these cliff is sink about 1 meter when height water and sand when low water. Stone kind is karst or old lime with variation of height start from 6 meters until 15 meters. Be side as rock climbing activity, this location is use for single rope technique (SRT) training, is a one of vertical caving technique. Usually SRT training use the bridge above the cliff with height about 25 meters. The beach is popular for fishing and surfing.

Labuhan Said come from Labuhan word meaning quay, because this place is a quay for fisherman, and Said meaning drawee. On past almost all drowning victims is drifted at this beach because the underwater wave circulation. Than by people this place call drawee quay (Labuhan Said) because it is like hook for dead body.

Third location is Uluwatu cliff at Ungasan village. This cliff is not so popular for climb but for scenery area. It is a great temple at the top of lime cliff with height about 100 meters above the sea, Indonesian ocean. Spread out area is about 5 mile, but only about 1 mile in Uluwatu temple area and only tree rock climbing stripe, this because it is lime rock and few of them old lime or karst rock.

There is no accurate database for this cliff, but there are three that has tray to climb and it is safe.

• First stripe located near Boma hill on right side of temple. Karst cliff is about 90 meters height and Indonesian ocean wave under it. The only climb system can be use here is upper belay system. Unknown climbing stripe long, but about half of the height is possible for climb.
• Second stripe is about 10 meters from the cliff corner on left of temple with height about 60 meters, it’s lime but safe to climb.
  Third stripe is above the lime cliff face with about 4 meter climbing stripe. The four meters is old lime and the face is 75 meters lime and soil.
