Besakih Track Of Agung Mountain

Climbing start point is police office beside Besakih temple yard at 900 meters above sea level (masl). On police office, all climb must ask permission, and ask the officer for guide or porter. From police office, crossing temple yard and entering temple stairs path on left of main temple. Follow this stairs until ramification and choice left. The stairs will end on last temple with highest location on Besakih temple named Pengubengan temple at 1160 masl. Track time from police office to this place is about 1 hour.

Track after Pengubengan temple is sandy soil and slope upward in the middle of heterogeneous forest. The domination plant is casuarinas (Casuarina junghunia) and bushes (Dacrylis glomerat).

Be sides those plant there is plantation such as corn and edelweiss (Anaphallis viscida). Fauna on this height is celucuk (Pycnanokis goiavier), chicken (Gallusvarius linnaeus) Above 1515 masl, climb track the slope more upward and slipper.

Until 1350 masl dominant plant are casuarinas with pine (Pinus merkusisii Jung et Vries) and bushes. Senggani (Melestama candidum) tree with purple color can be find at 1350 masl until 1600 masl. Follow by forest strawberry (Frugario veca) with some pine until 1800 masl height.

From this height is homogeneous forest with casuarinas with some bushes. On 1900 masl the slope is about 30 degree until 2040 masl, if lucky we can see long tail gray monkey (Macaca fascicularis) on this area. Homogeneous forest ended at 2300 masl height and follow by acacia tree (Acacia sp) on the right and casuarinas with some edelweiss on left track.

Sand track about 100 meters long with ravine on all side at 2410 masl is a border between sandy soil and rocky track until 2560 masl, where is a camp ground location.

Do not forget bring your rubbish down

Right under the cliff is a great location to build a tent. This place is named Boyke because this low cliff fully of squiggle by a haphazardly climber, and the most protrude is Boyke. Dominant plant is edelweiss and caliandra (Calliandra sp). Track time from Pengubengan temple until this site is about 8 hours.

Track to mountaintop is right side of the cliff with loose rocky and ravine on all side.

At 2780 masl no more forest strawberry, but caliandra and edelweiss still be found until appearance top at 2870 masl. Go to first top is a hard soil with narrow slope upward, ravine on all side and windy. From first top (2940 masl to second top at 2960 masl is sandy more narrow track, follow by downward end then upward again until main top at 3014 masl. mountain top is a ground field with dead cauldron.

Track time from Boyke to mountaintop is about 2,5 hours.

Note:

  • The altitude meters is altimeters barometer and could be vary result with other and depend on nature condition.
  • Track time is base on flaying camp technique (bring all climb equipment and foods with one big carrier).
  • There is one small water source here, but not guaranteed it always available, so bring at least 6 liters of water in case camping at Boyke.
  • On August is the dangers time to climb, big windy rains make the climb is impossible from first top to maintop.
